A happy-go-lucky 16 year old has a one-night stand with her friend, and ends up pregnant. When she decides on adoption instead of abortion, she is thrilled to find a seemingly-suitable couple wanting to adopt. However, as she gets to know them better, especially the husband, she begins to have doubts. Complicating matters further, she and her friend find themselves drifting from casual friendship into something more serious, all of which makes her dubious about the decisions she has made. The script won an Oscar.
